Partner Märt Rask in Postimees: “Justices of the Supreme Court independent in their decisions”
Former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and RASK Attorneys-at-Law partner Märt Rask was interviewed by Postimees, where he commented on issues related to “land exchange” criminal proceedings. According to Märt, the “land exchange” proceedings are of major importance and will probably be remembered for decades.
“This is a landmark case where problems have extended from legal issues to moral and ethical issues. A multi-layered pie, not to be swallowed in one bite,” he said in the article.
Märt criticises the excessive duration of the proceedings and notes that proceedings with such length violate the democratic rule of law. At the same time, Märt denied any speculation on the independence of the Justices of the Supreme Court. “As a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, I can say that the Justices of the Supreme Court make their judgements and decisions irrespective of media pressure, political ambition or the sense of justice in society. They are independent,” he stated.
