Representing an entrepreneur in obtaining consent for hunting in the limited management zone of Matsalu National Park
Case
The new
conservation rules established in Matsalu National Park in 2023 prohibit
hunting of non-native species, wild boar and small game in the limited
management zone from March through the end of August without approval from the
Environmental Board. For hunting to be approved, it must be deemed necessary to achieve a conservation goal, mitigate threats to human life or health, prevent damage caused by game or control the spread of disease.
Many game
animals forage for grain in farmlands, particularly from late June to August
during the kernel milk stage. Most game damage occurs primarily in July and
August, coinciding with the period when hunting is restricted without the
Environmental Board’s consent. The client’s existing control measures have not
effectively mitigated the damage, making hunting wild boars on their farmland
the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
RASK
attorneys Sandra Kaas and Villy Lopman represented the client in applying for
the necessary consent, which resulted in the Environmental Board granting
permission for hunting on agricultural lands within the limited management zone
of Matsalu National Park.
